Isn't it funny how most of us can't even remember words spoken, yet we can remember what song was playing and the words to it? I've always wondered why this is true, especially for me. There is something so significant about music. It warms our souls, brings back memories and makes us feel alive.  Movies are more enthralling with a soundtrack and I can only think of the music that is playing in my life's special moments as my life's soundtrack. I guess what I'm trying to say is that music makes life so much better! It's easy to forget the details and the words said. That is why music lyrics are the one thing that you can remember from one of the most special days of your life. When it comes to your wedding, it doesn't matter how much money you spend, it's about your love and music has a way of making you remember exactly what that day felt like. Music helps us express feelings too! Isn't it amazing?

Once upon a time, 10 whole years ago, I married my high school sweetheart. We were young kids with a dream fresh out of senior year. In fact, it was 2 weeks after my 19th birthday when we said, "I do." Three children and a few different jobs later, we can't even remember our vows or what we said to each other on that very special day but I can without a doubt remember the songs played during our ceremony. I cling to those lyrics for my memories.

I created this tutorial for you so that you could always have a piece of your special day displayed in a big way in your home.

For the past few years I had always had a vision of a wooden sign with our wedding song lyrics on it to hang up for us to see everyday. I want to be constantly reminded of one of the best days of my life and I want to remember how I felt walking over the grassy hill and down the aisle to be wed to "the one" for me. Not to get all mushy on you but he definitely is still "the one" and I'd marry him all over again if I could!

Since returning home from my second honeymoon celebrating our 10 year anniversary in Hawaii last week, I was more than ever motivated to get my wedding lyric sign done while he is at the Fire Station. So yesterday my little sidekick and I headed to the hardware store for supplies and Vons for snacks. Now if you know me at all, I love to snack and drink  Coca-Cola Zero™ while working on any projects. I guess I get it from my momma and it brings back special memories for me too.

I thought that it was fun to look through all of the Coke Zero bottles to find which song lyrics I'd want for their new "Share a Coke and a Song." I learned that you can download the Shazam app ( which I've been using for a few years and it's my favorite!) available in the ITunes store for Ipod, IPhone, Ipad, the play store for Android and other devices so that you can scan your bottle and actually listen to the song! How cool is that?

After I selected my favorite lyrics we checked out with our snacks and headed home to get to work on the sign. I choose an oldie but a goodie.

Now, I'm just going to let you know now, that this is probably going to be a lengthy tutorial but totally worth it.

HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED:
Wood Slats
Wood screws
White chalk paint
Black paint pen
Scotch 3M permanent tape
Scissors
Circular saw to cut wood slats or you can have the hardware store do it for you.
Tan paint
Black Glaze
D-rings & hanging wire
Screwdriver or drill
I hung it with a gorilla hook
Song lyrics that mean something to you

1. Assemble your sign. I used 9 wood slats across and screwed them down to two slats on the back. The smaller wood slats in the photo below are for framing your sign. I'll explain a little later.

2. Paint your sign white.
I painted 3 coats because the wood was soaking it up a little. Let completely dry.

3. Grab your tan and black glaze.

4. Paint the small slats tan and let dry completely.

5. Glaze the slats by rubbing in the glaze. The more glaze that you use, the darker the slats will look.

6. With your paint pen, write out your special lyrics. I wanted a love letter feel to my sign so I quickly wrote it out. The song that  I used is "That's All."

7. Cut small pieces of the permanent tape and stick them to the edges of the sign. Then peel off the red and stick the distressed/glazed sticks to them on all sides. Press firmly.

 8. Screw on the D-rings and attach the hanging wire.

After working in 100 degree weather in the garage creating this sign, I stopped to take a break. I'm usually camera shy but my goal is to be more in front of the camera for you guys.

After I cooled off, I couldn't wait to hang it up in my master bathroom so that I can see it daily and reminisce. Those lyrics are so special to me because that's the song my husband chose to be sung to me at my wedding. Swoon worthy!

Do you have any special song lyrics? If so, what song is it and what moment in your life was it playing?
